Very objective description of the background and events. It is important to remember that Putin's Russia razed Chechnya to the ground. Putin waged the Second Chechen War on August 26, 1999. The Russian military killed more than 25,000 Chechen civilians as a result of massive air strikes and shelling of cities and towns.
Now Puting invaded Georgia to "protect South Ossetians from genocide", even though by August 7, Russia had evacuated all civilians from Tskhinvali and brought in "volunteers" and Ossetian militias who systmatically shelled Georgian villages using weapons prohibited by the treaty. Russia and Ossetian militia violated the treaty and killed many Georgian civillians prior to August 7. After Georgian troops captured Tskhinvali, 20,000 Russian troops and hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles invaded Georgia and ordered/allowed Ossetian militias to carry out massive ethnic cleansing against Georgians (see Human Rights Watch reports). “Human Rights Watch researchers personally witnessed Ossetian militias looting and burning down ethnic Georgian villages during their research in the area,” said Rachel Denber, deputy director of the Europe and Central Asia division of Human Rights Watch. “These satellite images indicate just how widespread the torching of these villages has been in the last two weeks.” Human Rights Watch researchers spoke with several members of the Ossetian militias who openly admitted that the houses were being burned by their associates, explaining that the objective was to ensure that ethnic Georgians would not have the houses to return to. http://hrw.org/english/docs/2008/08/28/georgi19712.htm
